Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsalted or salted butter softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup black cocoa powder
  • 4 +/- tablespoons buttermilk substitute whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Whisk together the powdered sugar and the black cocoa powder.
  • Beat the butter in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the three tablespoon of the buttermilk and vanilla followed by the black cocoa and powdered sugar mixture. Mix on slow speed until smooth. Add more buttermilk one tablespoon at a time until the black buttercream frosting reached the desired thickness.

Notes

  1. Beating the butter until it is fluffy is an important step for a silky result.
  2. I do recommend the buttermilk verses whole milk for a deeper rich flavor profile.
  3. Flavor this recipe for the occasion. Be sure to read the post for flavor inspiration.
