“Super Soft Homemade Hamburger Buns” Recipe
Makes 6 – 4.25 inch Soft Homemade Hamburger Buns
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons Rapid Rise Instant yeast
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1 1/2 tablespoons salt
- 3 1/4 cups bread flour, unpacked and leveled
- 1/8 cup whole milk, room temperature
- sesame seeds (optional)

PREP
- Grease a large mixing bowl with butter. Set aside.
- Line a baking pan with parchment and 6 – Hamburger Bun Rings. Set aside.
- Place a large sheet of parchment on the counter.

MAKE THE BUN DOUGH
Stand Mixer
Combine the warm water, sugar and yeast in the base of a stand mixer. Give it a stir with a wooden spoon. Let it rest for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Add the softened butter, 1 egg, 2 cups of bread flour, and salt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes.
Next, add the milk and the remaining flour and beat on low speed for 1 minute until combined. Turn the stand mixer speed to high for another 2 minutes or until the dough becomes soft and pliable. Don’t over knead the dough. The homemade hamburger bun dough is done when it is bouncy, soft, and pliable.
By Hand
If you don’t have a stand mixer, no problem!
Combine the warm water, sugar and yeast in a large mixing bowl. Give it a stir with a wooden spoon. Let it rest for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
Add the softened butter, milk, 1 egg, bread flour, and salt and stir to combine with a wooden spoon.
Turn on to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes or until the hamburger bun dough becomes soft and pliable.
FORM THE HOMEMADE HAMBURGER BUNS
Gently lift the bun dough out of the bowl. Then, tuck the hamburger bun dough under to from a ball. Place the dough ball in the prepared bowl. Lightly cover with plastic wrap or a clean cloth and let the dough rise for 1 1/2 hour or until it has doubled in size.
When the dough has doubled in size punch the dough in the center. Carefully roll the dough from the bowl onto the prepared parchment paper on the flat surface. Using a dough cutter, cut the dough into 6 equal pieces. Form each piece into a ball and place in the center of the hamburger rings on the prepared baking sheet. Using the palm of a clean hand, press the hamburger bun dough gently to fill out the ring. Cover and let rest in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
If you are not using hamburger rings no problem. Simply form the homemade hamburger bun dough into 6 equal sized balls, place on the prepared baking sheet, and press to 4 inches. Let rise for 1 hour. Bake.
BAKE THE HOMEMADE HAMBURGER BUNS
Preheat Oven to 375°F.
In a small bowl, whisk 1 room temperature egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the risen buns with the egg wash. Sprinkle on optional sesame seeds.
Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and cool on a baking rack.
To remove the rings, run a knife around each ring and gently push the Homemade Hamburger Bun through.
How To Slice Homemade Hamburger Buns
Because these are super soft they require a gentle slice. Use a serrated bread knife with short back and forth strokes being carful not to smash the bun.
How To Store Homemade Hamburger Buns
BEST SERVED FRESH! When completely cooled, store in a covered container for up to 3 days at room temperature or 5 day in the refrigerator. They are delicious warmed or grilled before building your burger.
How To Make Smaller Buns
If you want a smaller bun, use a smaller hamburger bun ring or form smaller discs as per instructions. Bake at the same temperature until golden brown. The time will vary depending on the size.
