Who Created the Derby Pie How Did It Get Its Name?
At the Melrose Inn outside of Louisville, Kentucky in 1954, Walter, Leaudra, and their son George Kern created this tasty pie recipe for Inn guests. The family couldn’t decide on a name so they each put a name in a hat and drew a winner. The name “Derby Pie” was born.
In 1969 the state government of Kentucky trademarked the name “Derby Pie” and it became the official dessert of the state of Kentucky.
Sometimes this tasty pie is called a “May Day Pie”, “Run For The Roses Pie”, or the “Kentucky Pegasus Pie”.
Chocolate Chip Derby Pie Recipe
Derby Pie Ingredients
- 10 inches pie crust, thawed
- 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter
- 1⁄4 cup sugar
- 3⁄4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 3⁄4 cup light corn syrup
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons vanilla
- 3⁄4 chocolate chips, mild or dark
- 1 1⁄4 cups toasted pecan halves
Garnish
- whipped cream, fresh
- mint sprigs
Kentucky Derby pie Recipe Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees°.
Carefully place the pie crust in a pie plate. Crimp the edges with a fork. Place it back in the refrigerator to cool.
In a large mixing bowl using a hand mixer on medium, whip the butter, sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, eggs, and vanilla until frothy. The mixture will be a lovely frothy tan color.Fold in the chocolate chips and pecans.
Pour into the prepared cold pie crust and bake for 55 to 60 minutes until set.
Remove from oven and let cool.
Give this Run For The Roses Derby Pie a dollop of fresh whipped cream! Add a mint sprig! Serve!
